Huntsman is a Rotterdam-based company that produces polyurethanes. To keep pace with customer demand, it needed a new production line. Beijer Constructie supplied the steel structures for this new construction.
Some projects call for every ounce of your flexibility and expertise. Huntsman’s Project Capstone is undoubtedly one such project. This production line had to be manufactured under considerable time pressure. Beijer Constructie had to start working on the structure before it was known where the various pipes would run.
Project Capstone consists of five modules. Four of these serve as a substructure for supporting pipes, while the fifth is a staircase that has to withstand fire for at least 60 minutes. The structure is 15 metres high, 14 metres wide, 20 metres long and comprises roughly 177 tonnes of steel. Beijer Constructie built the steel structure, staircases, railings and grilles.
The various modules were erected in Raamsdonksveer, where they were tested, including the pipe support structure. Once these tests were completed, the structure was dismantled again and transported by water to the Maasvlakte site.
