The popular clothing chain Zara is a newcomer to Haarlem. Its arrival has pleased the city’s shoppers. However, Haarlem’s residents were less enthusiastic about the air purification systems located on the roof. Beijer Constructie built an elegant dome structure to conceal these from view.
This was a relatively small structure, but one that was far from easy to realise. To hide the air treatment cabinets on the roof of the store, an oval-shaped dome structure was chosen, which would be clad using Sendzimir-galvanised sheets.
The first challenge was presented by the location: the structure had to be erected in a busy shopping street. No cranes could be used here during the day. This meant that Beijer Constructie had to work mainly in the evenings and at night. While the dome structure was being assembled other issues came to light. A chimney had to be supported, for example, a balustrade incorporating glass had to be installed and landings had to be constructed to create safe escape routes. This small job therefore turned into a considerable challenge that called for a great deal of creativity and improvisation.
